Emperor, Empress encourage Miyakejima evacuees
SHIMODA, Japan - Emperor Akihito (2nd from R, front) and Empress Michiko (R) on Aug. 27 encourage people who evacuated to Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, from Miyakejima Island, south of Tokyo, after a series of volcanic eruptions last year. The couple arrived in Shimoda earlier in the day to stay at an imperial villa.
