Nikkei closes at 18-year low
TOKYO, Japan - A stock board in Tokyo's Ginza district on Sept. 17 shows the Nikkei Stock Average falling 504.48 points to close at a fresh post-bubble closing low of 9,504.41. The Nikkei marked the lowest close since Dec. 19, 1983 as the overall bearish sentiment ahead of the restart of U.S. stock trading overwhelmed buybacks spurred by the government's intervention to prevent the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar.
