Afghan boy flees to Pakistan, recounts air strikes

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Faridullah Saharjan, a 14-year-old Afghan boy, speaks Oct. 12 of his two-night trek to Peshawar, Pakistan from his war-torn homeland. He told Kyodo News, ''I couldn't sleep the first night of the bombing, because I was so scared. I was told by my father to run away, so I finally reached here after (endlessly) walking through for two nights.''

          TOKYO, Japan - A ceremony was held Aug. 12 to mark the opening of an exhibition in Tokyo of photos and sketches of ancient murals from North Korea's first UNESCO World Heritage site in a Pyongyang suburb. The exhibition will open to the public Aug. 13 and run through Sept. 4. Photos were taken by a team of Kyodo News photographers last year.

            WELDON, United States - Charles Jenkins (L), a U.S. Army deserter who spent decades in North Korea, and his wife, Hitomi Soga, a repatriated Japanese who had been abducted by North Korea, meet the press in Weldon, North Carolina, on June 20. The couple, along with their North Korean-born daughters Mika and Brinda, came to the United States on June 14 for Jenkins' first reunion in more than 40 years with his 91-year-old mother.
