Omron to sell lifelike cat robots

OSAKA, Japan - A model shows off cat robots, made by Omron Corp., that will go on the market from Nov. 20. The robots, called ''Necoro,'' can stretch their backs, lie down and purr. They are the same size as real cats and each weigh 1.6 kilograms. The robots contain various sensors which among other things allow them to memorize the frequency of human voices, so that they will face their owners when the owners call out the pet robots' names. Omron plans to sell 5,000 Necoro robots for about 185,000 yen each.

The new Walkman A series, to be put on the Japanese market Nov. 19, is equipped with functions to learn users' taste in music. The five new models, including a 20-gigabyte one capable of storing up to 13,000 songs, are expected to be available for 30,000 to 35,000 yen.

        TOKYO, Japan - Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc., the sales unit of Sony Corp., said Nov. 8 it will introduce on Nov. 23 a futuristic version of the AIBO dog-like robot pet - the AIBO Entertainment Robot ERS-220. The new AIBO model has 19 LEDs and multiple enhanced touch sensors from head to tail for better emotional expression. It will be priced at 180,000 yen.
