Endangered Madagascar lemurs make debut at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo

TOKYO, Japan - Soafiavy, a female Aye-aye lemur who is about 3 years old, hangs from a tree in a cage at the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo on Nov. 22. A pair of endangered Aye-aye lemurs from Madagascar, Soafiavy and 8-year-old male Mamy/2, which arrived in Japan in September, were made open to public viewing the same day.

                  TOKYO, Japan - Koo the black bear has gone into hibernation in an artificial environment at the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. Zoo officials say there is no precise evidence to determine that the 20-month-old female bear has gone into winter hibernation, but since around Dec. 18 she has been sleeping all day, and her breathing rate has gone down from about 10 times a minute to just three.                     TACHIKAWA, Japan - A 57-year-old adventurer from Tokyo said he hopes to complete his 22,000-kilometer trek by dog sled across the Arctic from central Siberia to eastern Greenland in July 2002, more than five years since he set out on the journey and traveling nearly double the current long-distance record. Kazuo Kojima said he embarked on the trip because he wanted to follow the route supposedly taken by ancestors of the Inuits to reach the North American continent some 20,000 years ago.                       TOKYO, Japan - Kimbia the okapi, a rare animal from Africa, makes her public debut June 13 at Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo. The 4-year-old Kimbia is on loan to Ueno Zoo from San Diego Zoo in the United States and arrived in Japan on June 6.
