Hotel tax to be introduced in Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara bows in appreciation Dec. 19 as the Tokyo metropolitan assembly voted into law a bill to levy a tax for stays at Tokyo hotels. The bill did not specify when the new tax will be imposed but Ishihara, who conceived the tax plan, earlier said he is keen on implementing it ahead of the World Cup soccer finals in Japan and South Korea set for May 31 to June 30, 2002.
