(2)Coast guard ship Amami returning to Kagoshima

KASARI, Japan - Bullet holes pepper the bridge of the Japan Coast Guard patrol ship Amami, which is sailing in the East China Sea 185 kilometers northwest of the island of Amami-Oshima on Dec. 23 to return to the Kagoshima port. The ship was fired on in the East China Sea on Dec. 22 during a shoot-out with an unidentified ship believed to be from North Korea.

                NAGASAKI, Japan - The Daiei Maru No. 11 (C), with a fishing net covering half of its deck, is pulled up to the surface by a crane ship from a depth of some 80 meters off Hirado Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, on Sept. 22, 2009, where it sank on April 14 while heading to the East China Sea. The salvage work is being conducted with hopes of recovering the remains of 12 crew members who went missing in the accident.

                  KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard survey ship Kaiyo heads out to sea from Moji port in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture on Sept. 11 to take part in a joint Japan-South Korea radioactivity survey mission in the southwestern region of the Sea of Japan, including waters close to the disputed Takeshima island, or Dokdo in Korean. The mission, which will last until Sept. 18, is intended to study possible impact of radioactive wastes dumped by the former Soviet Union and Russia.

                    NAHA, Japan - A video image released by the Japan Coast Guard on May 5 shows the Cyprus-registered cargo ship Thia Chryssoula which ran aground in waters off the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea on May 4.                       TOKYO, Japan - An object that appears to be part of a lower human jawbone was found on the salvaged North Korean spy ship on display at a Tokyo museum and may have belonged to one of the crewmembers, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) said on Dec. 17. The item was found by a staff member who was doing anticorrosion work on the ship that sank just about two years ago in the East China Sea off Japan after a shoot-out with JCG patrol vessels.
