Kanagawa to destroy 37 cows on farm in latest BSE case

YOKOHAMA, Japan - A cow is pulled into a truck on Sept. 6 at a dairy farm in Isehara, Kanagawa Prefecture, where Japan's fifth case of mad cow disease was found last month, to be destroyed due to fear it may be infected. A total of 37 cows at the farm will be destroyed.

Farm ministry starts random checks of beef in buyback scheme

TOKYO, Japan - Officials from the Agriculture and Livestock Indusries Corp affiliated with the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry check beef in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Feb. 8. The farm ministry launched random inspections of some 12,000 tons of beef, which the ministry purchased under the buyback scheme implemented after mad cow disease was found in Japan.

All Snow Brand Food products removed from stores

KOBE, Japan - All Snow Brand Food Co. ham and sausage, delicatessen and processed-meat products are removed from shelves at a supermarket in Kobe on Jan. 26, as its scandal relating to mad cow disease was unveiled. Snow Brand Food's employees in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, repackaged 13.8 tons of Australian beef last October in order to pass it off as Japanese beef and claim government compensation under the buyback scheme.
