NAGASAKI, Japan - A fireboat sprays water as part of a ceremony marking the launch into the sea of the Diamond Princess, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, on May 25 in Nagasaki Prefecture. The 113,000-ton vessel, 290 meters long and 41.5 meters wide, is designed to be environment-friendly, featuring diesel engines releasing lower amounts of pollutants.

        FUKUOKA, Japan - The ''Super Eco-Ship'' tanker Nadeshiko Maru, an environmentally friendly vessel that is driven by electric motors, was launched in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture on Sept. 11. The 749-ton oil tanker, built with assistance from the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, uses a contra-rotating propulsion system driven by two electric motors, with electricity supplied by four generators. Compared with diesel engine ships, the design supposedly improves energy efficiency and reduces the emission of carbon dioxide by about 10 percent.

            FUKUOKA, Japan - The Sapphire Princess, formerly the Diamond Princess, is launched in Nagasaki at a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. shipyard on Sept. 15.                   NAGASAKI, Japan - The 113,000-ton cruise ship Diamond Princess is towed by tugboats in Nagasaki Bay on Oct. 21 to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.'s dock in Koyagi, Nagasaki Prefecture, to repair damage sustained in a fire on Oct. 1. The vessel, owned by P&O Princess Cruises PLC of Britain, was launched in May, but caught fire while undergoing finishing work at another Mitsubishi dock in Nagasaki.
