Japan stops opposing U.S.-Russia indigenous whaling bid
FUKUOKA, Japan - U.S. Ambassador to Japan Howard Baker tells reporters June 24 in Fukuoka that Japan has withdrawn its opposition to a U.S.-Russian bid to get international permission for a whaling quota for indigenous Arctic peoples. In May, the International Whaling Commission rejected a U.S.-Russian proposal to renew the five-year subsistence quota of 280 bowheads.
