200 protesters conduct sit-in over Isahaya Bay project

KUMAMOTO, Japan - About 200 members of the Ariake Sea fisheries cooperative association stage a sit-in in front of the Kyushu Agricultural Administration Office in Kumamoto on July 10 to protest the construction of a dike as part of a land reclamation project in Isahaya Bay, southwestern Japan.

        TOKYO, Japan - Genjiro Kaneko (L), governor of Nagasaki Prefecture, hands a document carrying a resolution adopted by the Nagasaki prefectural assembly to Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshio Yatsu on March 7 in Tokyo. Kaneko is opposed to a proposal to temporarily halt a reclamation project and open a dike in Isahaya Bay in the prefecture. On March 6, Yatsu expressed willingness to suspend the reclamation work to analyze the quality of water in the 1,710-hectare reservoir behind the dike.

          TOKYO, Japan - Fishermen from Fukuoka Prefecture hand over to Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshio Yatsu at the ministry in Tokyo on March 1 a petition signed by 122,000 people, demanding the government halt a state-run land reclamation project and open water gates in Isahaya Bay. They believe the project and the 1997 closure of the water gates have caused this year's poor seaweed crops.
