Hitachi begins marketing world's 1st liquid-cooled PC

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said July 17 it has begun marketing what it calls the world's first liquid-cooled notebook personal computer (in handout photo). The Flora 270W Silent Model circulates a liquid coolant through a series of tubes inside to dissipate heat from a high-speed microprocessor. The PC with reduced noise is quiet and good for use in libraries, hospitals and educational institutions, Hitachi said.

The PCG-X505/SP, part of Sony's Vaio series, weighs 785 grams -- the lightest of all Windows XP-based PCs -- and is equipped with a 10.4-inch liquid crystal display. When closed, the front of the new PCs will measure as thin as 9.7 millimeters. Offering the PCG-X505/SP for 349,800 yen, Sony will accept orders via the Internet from Nov. 19. (Kyodo)
