Panel to recommend clearer food-labeling

TOKYO, Japan - Members of a government advisory council in their meeting in Tokyo on July 30 consider recommending the government to oblige food producers and packers to unify the terms they employ for use-by dates for their products. At present, food producers and packers are allowed to use a range of expressions, such as a ''use-by date'' and ''quality preservation period.''

New economic panel eyes full recovery

TOKYO, Japan - The Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, a new economic panel headed by Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, holds its first meeting on Jan. 6, the day major government administrative reforms aimed at exerting political leadership over economic policy-making came into force to bring about an early economic recovery and to restore the state's long-term financial health. Japan to name 28 food products for GMO labeling

TOKYO, Japan - Japan is poised to introduce mandatory labeling for tofu (bean curd), miso (bean paste) and 26 farm products made from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and processed food made mainly from GMOs for consumer use, starting in April 2000. A consumers cooperative store in Yokohama has put up a note which in part reads: ''Between 50 and 80% of American soybean used in this miso is GMO).''
