Nebuta Festival gets under way
AOMORI, Japan - The famous ''Nebuta matsuri (festival)'' featuring large paper-made floats begins in Aomori, northern Honshu, on Aug. 2. The floats have enormous images of popular legendary characters and are lit from the inside, making them glow eerily in the dark. After the festival, they are thrown into a river or the sea as a means of sending away illness or bad fortune.
