Gov't ordered to pay 2.75 bil. yen over noise from Atsugi base

YOKOHAMA, Japan - A lawyer for local residents around the Atsugi base in Kanagawa Prefecture holds up a banner in front of the Yokohama District Court on Oct. 16, which says the court ruled that a noise level on the Weighted Equivalent Continuous Perceived Noise Level index greater than 75 is illegal. The court ordered the government to pay 2.75 billion yen to compensate 4,858 residents for noise from the base.

Nuclear disaster-hit village reclassified into 3 areas

IITATE, Japan - Grass is being cut in the Nagadoro district of Iitate village, Fukushima Prefecture, on July 16, 2012, with a dosimeter (front) showing radiation levels of more than nine microsieverts per hour, before the government locks fences on roads leading to the district at midnight. The village, nearly all of whose residents have been evacuated since the March 2011 nuclear accident, was reclassified July 17 into three areas with varying levels of accessibility. Due to the high level of radiation exposure, the Nagadoro district was classified as "an area difficult to return to" for a long period of time.

Ruling on noise at U.S. base in Okinawa

Damages given over base noise

TACHIKAWA, Japan - One of plaintiffs holds a banner telling their supporters of their victory after the Hachioji branch of the Tokyo District Court ordered the government May 13 to pay around 160 million yen in compensation to 242 out of the 325 people who sued the government over aircraft noise at the U.S. forces' Yokota air base in western Tokyo. But the court rejected the plaintiffs' other demands for a ban on night flights and for damages from future aircraft noise.
