Karuizawa offers to preserve empress's birthplace

NAGANO, Japan - The Karuizawa township plans to acquire the decaying house of Empress Michiko's late parents in Tokyo (in photo taken in June 1999) for preservation, according to town officials Nov. 6. The property has been turned over to the Finance Ministry as part of payment for 3.3 billion yen in taxable assets the empress's father, Hidesaburo Shoda, left behind after he died.
