Bathhouse ordered to compensate foreigners denied entry

SAPPORO, Japan - David Aldwinckle, a 37-year-old U.S.-born resident of Hokkaido who is a naturalized Japanese citizen, points at a ruling by the Sapporo District Court on Nov. 11 ordering the operator of a bathhouse in Otaru, Hokkaido, to pay a total of 3 million yen in compensation to him and two other foreigners for refusing them admission because of its policy of rejecting foreign customers.

The Tokyo District Court on Sept. 26, 2013, ordered Apple to pay 330 million yen in damages to Japanese inventor Norihiko Saito for a patent infringement involving the U.S. firm's iPod music player. The patent that Saito's company applied for in 1998 covers technology for the Click Wheel controller that Apple adopted for the music player in Japan in 2004, the presiding judge said in a ruling.

            SAPPORO, Japan - The Sapporo District Court in session on June 15. The court issued a ruling rejecting a damages lawsuit filed by a group of war-displaced Japanese from China asking for state compensation over their plight in Japan. The Kochi District Court also delivered a similar ruling on the same day. A total of 2,200 war-displaced Japanese have filed 15 damages suits at various district courts in Japan since 2001.                   SAPPORO, Japan - David Aldwinckle (R) enters the Sapporo District Court on Nov. 11 to hear a ruling on his lawsuit demanding 6 million yen in compensation for being refused entry to a private bathhouse in Otaru, Hokkaido. The court ordered the bathhouse to pay a combined 3 million yen in compensation to Aldwinckle, a 37-year-old U.S.-born local resident who became a naturalized Japanese under the name of Debito Arudo, Olaf Karthause, 39, of Germany, and Ken Sutherland, 38, of the United States.
