Kitamura marks 50th year at Hawaii radio station

HONOLULU, United States - Miyoko Kitamura, a popular disk jockey in Hawaii, has marked her 50th year at KZOO, a Japanese-language AM radio station in Honolulu. Born in Tokyo, Kitamura, 77, married a Japanese American in 1950 and went to Hawaii two years later.

New pictures stir memories of Hawaii training boat tragedy

HONOLULU, United States - Tatsuyoshi Mizuguchi recounts memories of his son Takeshi who was killed in a collision between the Japanese fisheries training boat Ehime Maru and the U.S. submarine Greeneville in Hawaii on Feb. 9, 2001, during an interview with Kyodo News in Honolulu on Feb. 8. Mizuguchi, sitting beside a photo of Takeshi, newly released snapshots and videos which were restored from Takeshi's digital camera. Mizuguchi's son is the only victim whose body remains missing in the accident, which killed nine including Takeshi and three other students of Uwajima Fisheries High School in Ehime Prefecture.

As Greenspan's term ends, young artist's exhibit opens

Greenspan is due to leave his office on Jan. 31. Although only a young girl when Greenspan took over as the Fed chair, the 25-year-old Erin, who studies for her master's at Goldsmiths College in England, has been focusing on him as a subject since entering six paintings at an art festival centering around the theme of the dollar sign.

Ozu's movies shown at N.Y. film festival

NEW YORK, United States - Japanese actress Kyoko Kagawa speaks at a news conference Oct. 4, the same day Yasujiro Ozu's movies were shown at the 41st New York Film Festival at the Lincoln Center to mark 100 years since the late Japanese director was born. Kagawa appeared in Tokyo Story, one of his movies.

Honolulu ukulele player to release Ehime Maru song

HONOLULU, United States - Jake Shimabukuro strums a ukulele on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. He has written a song titled ''Ehimemaru,'' dedicated to the victims of the sinking of the Japanese training ship Ehime Maru near Hawaii last month, and plans to release it. Sales from the song are to be donated to a fund recently set up by Hawaii-based groups. Shimabukuro, a fourth-generation Japanese-American, said he wanted to do something to help relatives of the nine people missing, presumed dead, in the Feb. 9 collision.

Buddhist monks in Hawaii pray for rescue of missing 9

HONOLULU, United States - Photo shows Ryokan Ara, a 72-year-old priest at a Tendai Sect temple in Honolulu, who is one of several Japanese Buddhist monks in Hawaii who have been praying for the rescue of nine Japanese missing since the Feb. 9 sinking of a Japanese high school fisheries training ship by a U.S. submarine off the island of Oahu. ''We feel pain thinking about the families of the missing people. We hope they will return safe,'' Ara said.

3 coded letters written by ex-JCP head Nosaka unearthed

TOKYO, Japan - Three coded letters written by Sanzo Nosaka, a controversial Japanese Communist Party leader who was later expelled by his party and died seven years ago at age 101, shed light on his underground life in the United States after he sneaked into the country in 1934. The photo shows copies of the letters, translated into German, which were sent by Nosaka from New York to his Comintern handlers in Moscow in 1934 and now preserved at Russia's National Archives. The letters prove that Nosaka did more than produce antiwar propaganda during his four-year stay in the U.S., as generally believed by Japanese historians.
