Fire on grounded freighter soon to be brought under control

OSHIMA, Japan - A Japan Coast Guard ship directs water at the still-burning Bahamian-registered freighter Hual Europe near Habu port on Izu-Oshima Island on Nov. 27. A fire broke out Nov. 26 on the 56,835-ton freighter, which ran aground in October.

                KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard survey ship Kaiyo heads out to sea from Moji port in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture on Sept. 11 to take part in a joint Japan-South Korea radioactivity survey mission in the southwestern region of the Sea of Japan, including waters close to the disputed Takeshima island, or Dokdo in Korean. The mission, which will last until Sept. 18, is intended to study possible impact of radioactive wastes dumped by the former Soviet Union and Russia.

                  OSAKA, Japan - A 4.3-ton fishing boat is cut in two and capsizes after colliding with the 6,395-ton Panamanian freighter Mighty Dandy in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture on May 7. Two people on the fishing boat were thrown into the sea, and one of them -- a 46-year-old woman -- was missing. The skipper of the fishing boat was rescued by a Japan Coast Guard vessel which happened to be near the scene, officials said.

                    WAKAYAMA, Japan - A Japan Coast Guard vessel is in rescue operation off Wakayama Prefecture in the Pacific following collision between in search of the Cambodian-registered 1,208-ton Yin He No. 1 and the 313-ton Japanese freighter Eifuku Maru No. 7 on April 7. The Japanese ship sank after the collision, leaving one of its four crew members missing.
