Former S. Korean int'l Ko joins Kyoto

KYOTO, Japan - Former South Korea international midfielder Ko Jong Su (in file photo) has joined J-League first-division side Kyoto Purple Sanga on an 11-month loan from K-League club Suwon Bluewings, Purple Sanga said March 4. According to an agreement reached by both clubs, the 24-year-old Ko will play for the Kyoto-based club through Jan. 1 next year.

Yokohama sign S. Korean star Yoo

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Yokohama F Marinos have signed veteran South Korea international midfielder Yoo Sang Chul (in file photo) on a contract running from July 1 through June 2004, officials of the J-League first division side said on June 25. The versatile 31-year-old joined Yokohama in 1999 before moving to Kashiwa Reysol two seasons later and has made a total of 77 J-League appearances, scoring 38 goals.

Former Japan coach Okada named Yokohama manager

TOKYO, Japan - Former Japan coach Takeshi Okada (file photo) was named Dec. 4 the new manager of J-League first-division side Yokohama F Marinos for the 2003 season. Okada led Japan to their first-ever World Cup soccer appearance in 1998 and coached J-League club Consadole Sapporo for three seasons from 1999.

Korean World Cup soccer star honored by Osaka univ.

OSAKA, Japan - Korean midfielder Park Ji Sung (C) is awarded a special honor July 31 by the Osaka University of Economics and Law for his achievements in this year's World Cup soccer finals co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. Park, 21, is a first-year law student at the university and plays for the J-League first-division team Kyoto Purple Sanga.

Former Japan manager Ooft named as new Urawa boss

SAITAMA, Japan - Former Japan national team manager Hans Ooft (file photo) will become the manager of Urawa Reds in the 2002 season, officials of the J-League first-division side said Dec. 11. The Dutchman, who signed a one-year contract from February 2002, will take over from Brazilian Pita who will step down at the end of the season-ending Emperor's Cup.
