Japan-funded dam begins operating in Philippines
MANILA, Philippines - A controversial Japan-funded dam in the northwestern Philippines goes into operation May 2, generating an initial 85 megawatts. Touted as Asia's tallest dam and largest private hydropower project, the San Roque dam can generate as much as 345 megawatts when operation is in full swing and irrigate nearly 90,000 hectares of land in the area. The dam is owned by a consortium of Japanese and U.S. companies, including Marubeni Corp. and Kansai Electric Power Co. of Japan and Sithe Energies Inc. of the United States.
