Imperial Palace tours becoming popular

TOKYO, Japan - Visitors cross Niju-bashi, or the Double Bridge, the main gateway to the Imperial Palace in central Tokyo. Tours of the palace are becoming popular this year, the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo, the old name for Tokyo. Edo Castle, the seat of the Tokugawa shoguns, stood on the grounds of the palace.

Emperor Akihito enters hospital for heart surgery

TOKYO, Japan - People sign their names in the visitors' register at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Feb. 17, 2012, to express their support for Japanese Emperor Akihito. The 78-year-old emperor entered the same day the University of Tokyo Hospital in Tokyo to prepare to undergo heart bypass surgery the following day.

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a 10,000-yen gold coin that Japan will issue later this year to mark the 20th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's enthronement. The front side of the pure-gold coin (top) depicts a phoenix and the Imperial Palace's ''Nijubashi'' double-arched bridge and the reverse side (bottom) depicts the chrysanthemum seal. A 500-yen nickel-brass coins will also be issued.
