New statue replaces Hussein's in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A new statue, named ''The Survivors,'' is erected in central Baghdad on May 29 on a pedestal where a giant statue of Saddam Hussein had stood. Hussein's statue was pulled down by U.S. soldiers and Iraqi citizens on April 9, the day the U.S.-led coalition declared the former president no longer controlled Baghdad.

The retrospective, which began the same day, will run through May 5, featuring 11 of the Japanese film director's works, including a 1952 film depicting the horrors of the atomic bomb, ''Children of Hiroshima.'' Shindo, who is from Hiroshima City, turned 99 that day.
