Panel calls for cuts in tax breaks for elderly
TOKYO, Japan - Hiromitsu Ishi, who heads the government's Tax Commission, presents a report to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the premier's office on June 17. The report urged the government to trim tax breaks for the elderly and drastically hike the consumption tax over the next 10 to 15 years to cover the ballooning welfare expenses for the nation's rapidly aging society.
