Frenchman runs across five full continents

TOKYO, Japan - Serge Girard, a 52-year-old Frenchman, celebrates as he nears the finishing line in Tokyo on Sept. 3 of his 260-day, 19,100-km trans-Eurasia run which started in Paris on Dec. 17 last year. By completing the Eurasia run, Girard has crossed five continents -- first North America in 1997, followed by Australia, South America and Africa.

Jenkins family to leave for U.S.

SADO, Japan - Charles Jenkins (R), a former U.S. Army sergeant, and his wife Hitomi Soga (2nd from L), a former Japanese abductee repatriated from North Korea, leave Sado, Niigata Prefecture, on June 13 to visit the United States to meet Jenkins' mother for the first time in 40 years. Their two North Korea-born daughters will travel with the couple to North Carolina.

Hasuike says his children dedicated to doing what they must

KASHIWAZAKI, Japan - Kaoru Hasuike, a Japanese citizen formerly abducted by North Korea, tells reporters Aug. 21 that his North Korean-born son and daughter ''are dedicating to do what they have to do.'' The son and daughter came to Japan from N. Korea three months ago.
