Pro-independence activists march for name change in Taipei

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Tens of thousands of people chanting ''Say yes to Taiwan, say no to China'' takes to the streets of Taipei on Sept. 6 calling on the government to change the island's official name from the Republic of China (ROC) to Taiwan. Led by former President Lee Teng-hui, the one-day march was attended by several pro-independence political parties and social groups.

Hou Yu-ih, the candidate of the main opposition Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang, apologized to his supporters at a rally in New Taipei for failing to bring about a change of government, saying, "I let everybody down...I'm sorry to everyone."
