Tank catches on fire at Nippon Steel's Aichi plant

NAGOYA, Japan - A coke gas tank (fore) caught on fire in the Nagoya ironworks of Nippon Steel Corp. in the city of Tokai in Aichi Prefecture on Sept. 12, nine days after an explosion damaged another tank (behind) at the same site. Nippon Steel said the production line at the plant was unaffected by the blaze.

        HIROSHIMA, Japan - A fire engine tries to put out a fire at a steel plant of JFE Steel Corp. in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, on Aug. 20. The fire was apparently triggered by the leakage of coke gas in a 1-meter-diameter pipe while workers were reinforcing parts to support another gas pipe, firefighters said. No casualties were reported.

            TOKYO, Japan - Antinuclear civic group members march in Tokyo on Sept. 30 in memory of two workers who died after Japan's worst nuclear accident in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, a year ago. On Sept. 30, 1999, an explosion occurred following a nuclear fission chain reaction at a uranium-processing plant run by JCO Co. in Tokaimura, 120 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. Two plant workers died months later.
