Translation kits available free at Narita airport

NARITA, Japan - The Japanese government and the Narita Airport Authority launched trial services on Jan. 8 to lend free a translation kit to foreign visitors arriving at Narita airport. The services are part of the government-sponsored Visit-to-Japan campaigns. The English-Japanese translation kit also provides guidance on airport facilities and tourist spots around the airport and services for telephone calls and e-mail.

City in Tottori rents out EV with comic paintings

YONAGO, Japan - The city government of Yonago in Tottori Prefecture began renting out to visitors for free an electric vehicle with comic paintings on its body on Jan. 31, 2012. The municipal government offers the use of the car, which has a painting of comic girls and 10 local tourist spots, to promote the 13th International Comic Artist Conference to be held in November 2012 in the prefecture. Such cars called ''itasha,'' typically with paintings of animation characters, are popular among some young Japanese.
