World's largest gold coins to go on sale Oct. 7

TOKYO, Japan - A woman poses with the world's largest gold coin created by the Austrian Mint at the Austrian Embassy in Tokyo on Oct. 6. The face value of the coin, weighing about 31 kilograms and measuring about 37 centimeters in diameter, is set at 100,000 euros (about $122,870 or 13.5 million yen).

        TOKYO, Japan - A female official of the British Embassy (R) in Tokyo hands out a leaflet on British soccer fans in the Roppongi entertainment district, central Tokyo, on the night of May 15. The embassy printed about 40,000 leaflets advising Japanese people about the behavior of British soccer fans, who will visit Japan for the World Cup finals starting May 31.

          TOKYO, Japan - A plaque commemorating Chiune Sugihara (shown in this file photo), a Japanese diplomat who saved about 6,000 Jews from Nazi Germany during World War II, will go up at the Foreign Ministry. While working as vice consul at the Japanese mission in Kovno, Lithuania, Sugihara ignored orders from Tokyo and issued thousands of Japanese transit visas in 1940 to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. In 1947, he retired and returned to the country, but reportedly faced punitive action for disobeying orders. He died in 1986.

            TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows Hungarian forint coins recovered from vending machines in the Tokyo area. Police arrested two men Nov. 18 on suspicion of stealing 3,000 yen by placing these coins in a vending machine and operating the return-coin lever. The Hungarian coins worth about 22 yen each have been altered to make them the same size and weight as 500 yen coins.
