Kerama Islands haunted by wartime mass suicides

ZAMAMI, Japan - Hideo Higa, a guide for the Battle of Okinawa, stands in front of Yamatomma Trench on Zamami Island on March 8, where mass suicides took place under pressure from Japanese soldiers. The island in the village of Zamami, Okinawa Prefecture, is one of Kerama Islands, some 40 kilometers west of Naha on the main island of Okinawa.
