3 more, including 4-yr-old boy, listed as suspected abductees

TOKYO, Japan - Three more people have been added to the list of those who may have been kidnapped by North Korean agents, a private organization investigating the abduction issue said June 27. The photo released by the Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea shows Hiroshi Sasaki, who disappeared from Kanagawa Prefecture in April 1981 when he was 21.

According to JVC officials, JVC delivered 2.4 million yen worth of confectioneries and medical supplies to flood victims in North Korea in late October. The money was collected through public donations in Japan, the officials say.

Ex-abductee Soga voices gratitude for support

SADO, Japan - Former abductee Hitomi Soga speaks at a news conference in Sado, Niigata Prefecture, on Oct. 17 as she marks the fifth anniversary of her repatriation from North Korea. Soga and four other Japanese abductees, abducted by North Korean agents in three separate cases in 1978 from Niigata and Fukui prefectures, were repatriated to Japan on Oct. 15, 2002.

Yokota to retire as head of abductee families' group

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeru Yokota (file photo), who heads a group of Japanese families of victims of North Korea's abductions, plans to step down from the post due to waning physical strength. Yokota, 74, became the head of the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea when it was formed on March 25, 1997, and has led the campaign, together with his wife Sakie, 71, to seek the return of abductees, including their daughter Megumi, who was abducted by North Korean agents in 1977 at the age of 13.

Police recognize woman as 17th N. Korea abduction victim

TOKYO, Japan - The National Police Agency said on Nov. 17 it has formally recognized Kyoko Matsumoto (photo), a woman who has been missing since 1977, as the 17th Japanese victim of North Korean abduction. Matsumoto went missing after leaving home in Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast, at around 8 p.m. on Oct. 21, 1977, saying she was going to a knitting class. She was then 29.

TOKYO, Japan - The relatives of Japanese and South Korean victims of abduction by North Korea hold a gathering in Tokyo on May 27 as part of their efforts to rescue their missing kin from North Korea.

Chimura couple told police ex-agent Sin Guang Su taught them Korean

TOKYO, Japan - Two repatriated Japanese victims of abduction by North Korea have told police that Sin Guang Su (in file photo), a former North Korean agent who is on the international wanted list, was in charge of educating them in the North, police sources said Feb. 2. Yasushi and Fukie Chimura, both 50, have said to police investigators that Sin, 76, taught them Korean and other things at a facility in North Korea.

Kin express joy after film on abductee wins prize

TOKYO, Japan - The relatives of victims of North Korea's abductions expressed their delight in Tokyo on Jan. 30 after ''Abduction: The Megumi Yokota Story,'' a U.S. documentary film on the abduction of the Japanese woman, won the best documentary award at the U.S. Slamdance Film Festival in Utah on Jan. 27. Sakie Yokota (R), Megumi's mother, and Teruaki Masumoto (L), whose sister Rumiko was abducted in 1978 at age 24, meet the press showing photos at the festival.

Repatriated abductees identify 2 N. Korean agents

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Sin Guang Su, one of two North Korean agents, who have been identified by repatriated Japanese abductees Kaoru Hasuike and Yasushi Chimura as being responsible for their abductions, investigative sources said on Dec. 30. Their testimonies have prompted the Japanese police to launch an investigation in order to obtain arrest warrants for the two agents. The other agent is a man simply known as ''Park.'' the source said.

Abduction inquiry group to air messages on radio reaching N. Korea

OSAKA, Japan - Akihiro Arimoto, who had his daughter Keiko abducted by North Korea, speaks as his wife Kayoko listens at a meeting of the Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea held in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture, on Oct. 22.
