Asia-Pacific AIDS confab opens in Kobe to discuss prevention

KOBE, Japan - A five-day international conference aimed at facilitating prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS in the Asia-Pacific region opened July 1 in Kobe, with about 3,000 people living with the disease, medical workers, researchers and supporters from about 50 countries attending.

Minamata disease symposium opens in Kumamoto Pref.

KUMAMOTO, Japan - The opening ceremony of the Sixth International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant is held in Minamata, Kumamoto Prefecture, on Oct. 15. Some 500 researchers from about 40 countries are taking part in the five-day conference to discuss the actual conditions of mercury pollution around the world and study measures to combat them.

WHO regional confab on polio eradication begins in Kyoto

KYOTO, Japan - The World Health Organization (WHO) and representatives of 37 countries and territories in the western Pacific kick off a four-day meeting in Kyoto on Oct. 27. The conference is expected to officially declare the region free of the virus that causes polio.

Albanian boy expresses thanks for treatment in Japan

OKAYAMA, Japan - Nezir Shinik, a 3-year-old ethnic Albanian boy from Kosovo, expresses thanks for having received four months of treatment in Japan for an intractable eye disease, at a news conference at the office of the Association of Medical Doctors in Asia (AMDA), in Okayama Prefecture. Nezir came to Japan with AMDA support and was admitted to Kanazawa University Hospital, Ishikawa Prefecture, in July. At his right is his mother.
