Asia-Pacific AIDS confab ends in Kobe

KOBE, Japan - A five-day international conference aimed at facilitating prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS in the Asia-Pacific region ended July 5 in Kobe, which was attended by people living with the disease, medical workers, researchers and supporters from about 50 countries.

    KOBE, Japan - An international conference on prevention of natural disasters in Asia gets underway in Kobe on Jan. 15, just ahead of the eighth anniversary of the earthquake that struck the city on Jan. 17, 1955, killing more than 6,000 people. At the three-day meeting, the some 300 participants, including government officials, nongovernmental organization (NGO) members and scholars, will exchange views on how to share lessons from past disasters and hone prevention skills.

      TOKYO, Japan - About 50 people from Japan, Peru and five other countries march Jan. 16 to the house in Tokyo where deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori is staying, to hand him a letter urging him to return home as well as an economy-class air ticket to Peru. The demonstrators from the Japanese civic organization Peace Boat were unable to hand over the ticket, with police in front of the house in Tokyo's Ota Ward maintaining nobody was home. The house belongs to Japanese writer Ayako Sono.

        NAGASAKI, Japan - About 1,000 people from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) from 17 countries gather at a three-day conference in Nagasaki on Nov. 18 to discuss ways of abolishing nuclear arms in one of the largest antinuclear NGO events ever held in Japan. The Nagasaki Global Citizens' Assembly for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is being sponsored by the Nuclear Weapons Abolition Year 2000 Nagasaki Citizens' Council and the Nagasaki city-backed organizing committee.

          Confab of indigenous people begins in Sapporo

          SAPPORO, Japan - Representatives of indigenous people from Canada, Guam, New Zealand, Tonga and Japan begin a six-day conference on cultural exchanges, in Sapporo on Dec. 4. The forum, called the Indigenous People Conference, is being attended by eight indigenous people from the four Pacific Rim countries and region, and 12 Ainu people from Japan.
