Deep sea drilling ship delivered to gov't

NAGASAKI, Japan - The deep-sea drilling vessel Chikyu berths at the Nagasaki dockyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., which built the vessel, for a ceremony to be delivered to the government's marine science agency on July 29. The vessel aims to drill to the deepest depth ever in the Earth to shed light on mysteries under the planet's crust.

The warship, built at a cost of 140 billion yen, was delivered to the MSDF in a ceremony at the Mitsubishi dockyard. The 7,750-ton Ashigara is Japan's sixth and largest Aegis-class destroyer.

The Ashigara will be fitted with the U.S.-developed sea-based Standard Missile-3 antimissile system after it goes into service in spring 2008.

                      Japanese research ship heads to Indonesia to study quake mechanism

                      KAGOSHIMA, Japan - The 1,739-ton Natsushima, a deep-sea research vessel of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, heads to Indonesia on Feb. 2 to conduct research on underwater topography to study earthquake-causing mechanisms. Researchers aboard the ship plan to conduct the research for about a month, from February to March, near the epicenter of the Dec. 26 earthquake off northern Sumatra, which triggered the deadly Asian tsunami.
