Israeli firm apologizes to relatives over fatal boat collision

NEMURO, Japan - Relatives of victimized crew members of the Japanese fishing boat Shinsei Maru No. 3 listen to Doron Goder, president of Israeli shipping firm Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. in Nemuro, Hokkaido on Oct. 7. Agreement reached on release of fishermen detained by Russia

Fishing boat wreckage recovered

TATEYAMA, Japan - The two broken halves of the fishing boat Seitoku Maru which collided with the Japanese destroyer Atago off Chiba Prefecture on Feb. 19 are lifted to the deck of a support vessel on Feb. 20. Coast Guard investigators will examine the wreckage to help determine the cause of the accident. Two fishermen -- father and son -- on board the Setoku Maru remain missing.

Fishing boat Zuisho Maru freed 7 months after seizure by Russia

KUSHIRO, Japan - The Japanese fishing boat Zuisho Maru No. 38, seized by Russian authorities in January for illegal fishing, berthed at Rausu, Hokkaido after it was released by Russia and towed back to Rausu on Aug. 14. The captain Takashi Kawabata and five other crew members of the 19-ton vessel had been released by the end of May. Russian authorities accused Kawabata of illegal fishing and imposed a 300,000 ruble (1.4 million yen) fine.

Coast Guard ship heads to Kunashiri to collect fisherman's body

NEMURO, Japan - A Japan Coast Guard ship leaves Nemuro, Hokkaido, on Aug. 18 for Russian-administered Kunashiri Island to collect the body of a Japanese fisherman killed by gunfire from a Russian border patrol boat off Nemuro.

Japanese boat collides with Chinese cargo ship off Kochi

KOCHI, Japan - Japan Coast Guard divers (below) search for crew from the 9.29-ton Japanese fishing boat Seiryo Maru (above), which collided with a Chinese freighter and capsized early June 27 some 110 kilometers south of Kochi port in western Japan. One of the two missing fishermen was found about six hours after the collision.
