Fujimori not eligible to run for presidency: Peru election chief

LIMA, Peru - Enrique Mendoza, the head of Peru's national electoral council, speaks in an interview with Kyodo News in Lima on Nov. 25. Mendoza said that former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who is detained in Chile, is not eligible to run in the upcoming presidential election in April. ''There are about 900 people who are ineligible to run as candidates and former President Fujimori is among them,'' Mendoza said.

Masa, 61, who supported novelist Mario Vargas Llosa in the 1990 presidential election, said Masaki Seo told him shortly before the poll that Fujimori neither had Japanese citizenship nor a Japanese passport and that his name was not included in a Japanese family register.
