Hokkaido volcanic eruption deemed phreatic
SAPPORO, Japan - A minor eruption at Mt. Meakandake in Hokkaido on March 21 was a phreatic, or steam-driven, eruption, a local meteorological observatory said March 22. Photo taken on March 22 shows steam spewing from a new crater (below in center) and that from the crater at the top.
