Abe visited Yasukuni in April, likely to spur debate in LDP race
TOKYO, Japan - Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe arrives at the prime minister's official residence to attend a Cabinet session on Aug. 4. Abe, who is the frontrunner to become Japan's next prime minister, visited the war-linked Yasukuni Shrine in April this year, sources familiar with the matter said. The move would intensify debate in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's leadership race in September over whether Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's successor should visit Yasukuni, which enshrines 14 Class A war criminals along with the war dead.
