Rooftop cultivation of sweet potatoes aimed at fighting summer heat

TOKYO, Japan - NTT Urban Development Co. and NTT Facilities Inc. on Aug. 29 unveiled a system for cultivating sweet potatoes on rooftops to combat the heat island phenomenon that causes temperatures in urban centers to rise much higher than in surrounding areas. The two companies said the system has yielded impressive results and aim to put the new technique to actual use by next summer.

The two companies signed an agreement the same day to integrate their managements on April 1 next year under a joint holding company, to be called NKSJ Holdings Inc., to provide ''services of the highest quality'' and increase competitiveness.
