Kawasaki Heavy succeeds in trial run of battery-powered tramcar

KOBE, Japan - Staff of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. successfully run a battery-powered tramcar they have developed on a trial basis on Aug. 30 in a bid to realize commercial use at the end of 2008. The 18.4-meter-long streetcar, weighing 30.8 tons and powered by 16 nickel-hydrogen batteries, smoothly ran on a 280-meter track at some 20 kilometers per hour, a normal speed for commercially operated tramcars, in the company's plant in Kobe.

Mitsubishi Heavy to take orders for Wakamaru robot in Sept.

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said Aug. 29 it will accept orders from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31 for the Wakamaru humanoid robot (in photo) for use at home. Mitsubishi said it plans to sell 100 of the robot at a price of 1.58 million yen each, including consumption tax, initially for residents of Tokyo's 23 wards. It will select buyers by lot if too many people place orders. Wakamaru, 1-meter high and 30 kilograms in weight, is powered by rechargeable batteries and moves on wheels. It can work as a ''secretary,'' taking note of the owner's schedule and announcing appointments. It can also serve as a ''watchdog'' by alerting the home owner in the event of a break-in, the company said.

Mitsubishi Heavy markets 1st self-made chopper

KOMAKI, Japan - Photo shows the first helicopter developed entirely in-house by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. The company delivered the MH2000 helicopter, priced at 400 million yen, to a Chiba, east of Tokyo, helicopter charter and maintenance company. The 14-meter-long helicopter flies at a maximum speed of 280 km per hour and has a range of 780 km.
