Panamanian-registered freighter Giant Step runs aground off Ibaraki Pref.

TOKYO, Japan - The body of the Panamanian-registered 98,587-ton freighter Giant Step is seen broken into two pieces off Ibaraki Prefecture on Oct. 7 after it ran aground the previous day. Among 26 Indian and Sri Lankan crew members on board the ship, nine still remain unaccounted for.

Japan's last MSDF ship returns from refueling mission

TOKYO, Japan - After completing a four-month mission to refuel vessels of U.S.-led coalition forces in the Indian Ocean, the 8,150-ton Maritime Self-Defense Force supply ship Tokiwa berths at Narumi pier in Tokyo on Nov. 23, as families of the crew members await the return of their loved ones. The Tokiwa is the last MSDF vessel to return home after Japan called off a six-year refueling mission in the Indian Ocean, as the government failed to get a bill through parliament to re-authorize the mission.

Fishing boat cut in two, capsizes after collision with freighter

OSAKA, Japan - A 4.3-ton fishing boat is cut in two and capsizes after colliding with the 6,395-ton Panamanian freighter Mighty Dandy in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture on May 7. Two people on the fishing boat were thrown into the sea, and one of them -- a 46-year-old woman -- was missing. The skipper of the fishing boat was rescued by a Japan Coast Guard vessel which happened to be near the scene, officials said.
