Police obtain arrest warrant for N. Korean woman for abducting Soga

NIIGATA, Japan - Japanese police obtained an arrest warrant on Nov. 2 for Kim Myong Suk (in portrait released by police) a North Korean woman believed to be in her 70s or 80s, on suspicion of her involvement in the 1978 abduction of Hitomi Soga from Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture to North Korea. The police said they will ask North Korea, via Japan's foreign ministry, to hand her over.

Men Found on Boat in North East Japan Say they came From N. Korea

AKITA, Japan,-Nov. 24 Kyodo - A boat carrying eight men claiming to be fishermen from North Korea has washed ashore in the north eastern Japan prefecture of Akita, police said Friday. The police received a call from a resident in the city of Yurihonjo around 11:30 p.m. Thursday about suspicious men at the seaside. They later found the men on the wooden boat at a nearby marina. The men had no life-threatening injuries and appeared to speak Korean, the police said. They have been taken into protective custody. Hachiro Okonogi, chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, told reporters after a Cabinet meeting that the men have said they were fishing before the boat broke down and washed ashore. In November 2015 a wooden boat drifted ashore in the city of Noshiro in Akita and skeletal remains of two men were found inside the vessel and nearby.

Ex-abductee Soga voices gratitude for support

SADO, Japan - Former abductee Hitomi Soga speaks at a news conference in Sado, Niigata Prefecture, on Oct. 17 as she marks the fifth anniversary of her repatriation from North Korea. Soga and four other Japanese abductees, abducted by North Korean agents in three separate cases in 1978 from Niigata and Fukui prefectures, were repatriated to Japan on Oct. 15, 2002.

Police recognize woman as 17th N. Korea abduction victim

TOKYO, Japan - The National Police Agency said on Nov. 17 it has formally recognized Kyoko Matsumoto (photo), a woman who has been missing since 1977, as the 17th Japanese victim of North Korean abduction. Matsumoto went missing after leaving home in Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast, at around 8 p.m. on Oct. 21, 1977, saying she was going to a knitting class. She was then 29.
