No-frills library opens in Fukushima Prefecture

YAMATSURI, Japan - Yamatsuri, a small town in Fukushima Prefecture which has butted the national trend of city merger, opened a no-frills public library on Jan. 14 that has a collection of 36,000 books, all donated from businesses and private individuals nationwide. More than 290,000 books have been sent to the township since July last year when it announced plans to turn a local martial arts gym into a public library to be stocked solely with donated books.

American reaches Okinawa ending walking trip through Japan

NAHA, Japan - Gregory Michel, a 28-year-old American environmentalist, holds a bouquet at the Peace Memorial Park in the southern Okinawa city of Itoman on Dec. 14 after completing a two-year trip walking through Japan. Michel, a staff member of a private educational organization on the environment, began the trip sponsored by his organization, the World School Network in Tokyo, in September 1999 and spent about 300 days walking more than 4,000 kilometers through Japan, while living in a tent.

Okinawans rally over alleged crimes by U.S. servicemen

NAHA, Japan - More than 7,000 residents of Okinawa took part in a rally on July 15 in the southern Okinawa Island city of Ginowan to protest two criminal cases allegedly committed by U.S. servicemen earlier this month and to call for a smaller U.S. military presence in the island prefecture. It is the largest gathering in the southernmost prefecture to protest the U.S. military since some 85,000 locals attended a similar rally in the wake of the September 1995 rape of a 12-year-old girl in the prefecture by three U.S. servicemen.
