High court orders NHK redress over sex-slave 'trial' program

TOKYO, Japan - Plaintiffs rejoice in front of the Tokyo High Court on Jan. 29 after the court ordered Japan Broadcasting Corp. and two TV production companies to pay 2 million yen in compensation to a women's rights group over a 2001 television program on Japan's wartime sex slavery.

Suit against NHK over 'comfort women' program rejected

TOKYO, Japan - Members of Violence Against Women in War-Network Japan (VAWW-NET Japan) and lawyers speak at a press conference March 24 after the Tokyo District Court mostly rejected a 20 million yen damages suit they filed against NHK and two production companies over an NHK TV program on a 2000 wartime sex slavery mock tribunal in Tokyo. The plaintiff had claimed the defendants reedited the program without explaining to the group which helped NHK and the production agencies to produce the program.

Tokyo high court rejects appeal by former Taiwan sex slaves

TOKYO, Japan - Four out of a group of seven women from Taiwan meet the press in Tokyo on Feb. 9 after the Tokyo High Court rejected their appeal for an official apology from the Japanese government and a total of 70 million yen in damages for having been forced to provide sex for the Japanese military before and during World War II.

Court rejects 1st suit against automakers over exhaust

TOKYO, Japan - Two plaintiffs hold banners reading ''We won the suit'' after the Tokyo District Court ordered the central government, the Tokyo metropolitan government, and the state-run Metropolitan Expressway Public Corp. to pay the 99 plaintiffs a combined 79.2 million yen in compensation for causing health problems through motor exhaust gas. The court rejected their damages suit lodged against automobile manufacturers, the first in Japan.

Court orders compensation for Minamata victims

OSAKA, Japan - A group of plaintiffs in a compensation suit against the central government, the Kumamoto prefectural government and a chemical company over Minamata mercury-poisoning disease walk to court on April 27. The Osaka High Court that day ordered the two governments and Chisso Corp. to pay poisoning victims and their bereaved relatives 320 million yen in damages. The suit was initially filed 19 years ago.

Japanese firm settles with 3 Koreans over forced labor

TOYAMA, Japan - South Korean women who sued machine tool maker Nachi-Fujikoshi Corp. over their wartime forced labor speak to the media July 11 at Toyama prefectural hall after a settlement was reached with the company at the Supreme Court in Tokyo. The Toyama-based company will pay three South Koreans and their supporters between 30 to 40 million yen to settle the suit, filed in 1992. The plaintiffs comprise two women -- Lee Jong Suk, 68, and Choi Bong Nyon, 69 -- and one man -- Ko Dok Hwan, 77.
