Nationally unified achievement tests revived after 42-yr hiatus

TOKYO, Japan - Pupils sit to take unified achievement tests at an elementary school in Tokyo on April 24. A total of 2.33 million sixth-grade pupils at elementary schools and third-year students at junior high schools across Japan took part in the tests after a 42-year hiatus in the face of growing concern over a decline in Japan's academic standards.

                      TOKYO, Japan - A total of 130 elementary and junior high school students from Miyakejima Island attend a school opening ceremony on April 6 at Akikawa High School in Akiruno, western Tokyo.
