Hokkaido police inspect Meat Hope plant, reenacts meat fraud
TOMAKOMAI, Japan - His head bowed, Minoru Tanaka, 68, president and founder of Meat Hope Co., walks out from the company's Shiomi meat-processing plant in Tomakomai, Hokkaido on July 3, helping police gather evidence on how the company mixed miscellaneous meat and sold the product as ''ground beef.'' Tanaka has acknowledged the fraudulent practice, saying it was intended to ''cut down costs.'' Tanaka has also admitted using rainwater to thaw frozen meat.
