Ex-Peruvian President Fujimori fails to win Diet seat in Japan

SANTIAGO, Chile - Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who holds dual Peruvian-Japanese nationality, concedes defeat in Japan's House of Councillors election on July 29 after ballot returns show he failed to garner enough votes to win a seat in the upper house. Fujimori, who was on the ticket of the minor People's New Party, is under house arrest in Santiago. He was arrested by Chilean police in November 2005 after arriving unexpectedly from Tokyo ahead of Peru's presidential election in April 2006. On the background is a Fujimori poster used in his in absentia campaign in Japan.
