Newspaper banner headlines on LDP's crushing upper house defeat
TOKYO, Japan - Morning newspapers in Tokyo on July 30 carry banner headlines on the Liberal Democratic Party's crushing defeat in the House of Councillors election the previous day. The LDP lost 19 of the 56 seats it held before the election, while the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan added 28 to the 32 seats it held before the poll. Half of the 242 upper house seats are up for reelection every three years. With 46 seats not open to contest, the LDP now has a total of 83 seats in the upper house versus 109 for the DPJ.
