Japan calls on N. Korea to resolve abduction issue on anniversary

NIIGATA, Japan - Shigeru and Sakie Yokota, the parents of Megumi, who was abducted to North Korea from Niigata 30 years ago when she was 13, attend a meeting in Niigata on Oct. 15 calling for public support on the abduction issue. Oct. 15 marks the fifth anniversary of the repatriation of five Japanese abductees from North Korea and Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura renewed calls for North Korea to resolve the abduction issue. North Korea says Megumi committed suicide, a claim rejected by Japan.

Kin ask gov't to seek early resolution of N. Korea abduction issue

TOKYO, Japan - Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura (2nd L) meets with the parents of Megumi Yokota and relatives of other Japanese abducted to North Korea at the prime minister's office on Oct. 5 where the families urged the government to seek an early resolution to the abduction issue. Yokota to retire as head of abductee families' group

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeru Yokota (file photo), who heads a group of Japanese families of victims of North Korea's abductions, plans to step down from the post due to waning physical strength. Yokota, 74, became the head of the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea when it was formed on March 25, 1997, and has led the campaign, together with his wife Sakie, 71, to seek the return of abductees, including their daughter Megumi, who was abducted by North Korean agents in 1977 at the age of 13.

Gov't to work on support measures for those affected by sanction

Yokota parents glad about Kim Young Nam family reunion

Abductees' kin urge N. Korean sanctions if no progress in talks

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeru Yokota (R), representing relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea, said Nov. 1 the relatives called on the government to impose economic sanctions on North Korea if upcoming bilateral talks with the North in Beijing fail to achieve progress, such as the repatriation of any surviving abductees. Yokota and others made the call in a meeting with government officials.
