Tokyo taxis begin 710 yen flag fare, 1st hike in 10 years

TOKYO, Japan - Taxi operators in Tokyo and nearby Kanagawa Prefecture hiked their fares on Dec. 3 for the first time in 10 years, raising the flag fare for the first 2 kilometers to 710 yen from the previous 660 yen as well as subsequent distance-based fares. Photo shows a notice on a taxi door at JR Tokyo Station indicating the fare has been raised to 710 yen for the first 2 kilometers.

                    NAGOYA, Japan - A taxi company employee puts a new fare sticker on the side window of a taxi in Nagoya, where the starting fare went up to 500 yen on Oct. 19 for the initial ride of up to 1.3 kilometers, the first effective fare increase in 11 years. On the same day, the government announced a 7.2 percent hike in Tokyo taxi fares from Dec. 3, raising the starting fare for the first 2 km from 660 yen to 710 yen.
